For the past few years now, web designers have been adding depth to their designs. What is depth? Well in terms of perception which will be my main focus today. Depth perception is is the visual ability to perceive the world in three dimensions (3D). Now of course this is impossible when it comes to design on 2D surfaces. Nonetheless, we can still simulate the effect using various methods.
Adding a sense of depth to a design can make that design seem more realistic and increase visual interest. Building out the 3rd dimension pulls the viewer into the design and can help you set up entry points and control flow throughout your design. We’re 3-dimensional beings. Adding back the illusion of the missing dimension will add back a sense of reality, a sense of the physical. What can we do to create the illusion of depth in our designs?
